Shindo Pass · Fuefuki, Yamanashi

Sunrise at Twin Terrace —
Mt. Fuji from above,
at the moment the
world turns gold.

Lake Kawaguchi. Lake Saiko. Mt. Fuji rising between them. For twenty minutes around sunrise, it is the most cinematic backdrop in Japan.

Early morning · ~2–3 hours total Pickup from accommodation included Year-round, weather permitting

The Location

The viewpoint most visitors never find.

Twin Terrace sits at approximately 1,400 metres above sea level on Shindo Pass (新道峠), on the southern ridge above Fuefuki City. Two observation decks — Upper Terrace and Lower Terrace — face an unobstructed panorama that takes in Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Saiko, and Mt. Fuji rising directly behind them.

Most international visitors photograph Mt. Fuji from lake level. From Twin Terrace, the perspective inverts — the lakes fall below you, and the mountain fills the sky. In the twenty minutes around sunrise, when the peak catches the first light and the surface of Kawaguchi is still in shadow, there is no comparable viewpoint in Yamanashi.

What to Expect

A morning at Twin Terrace — hour by hour.

From pre-dawn pickup to your first coffee back at the hotel.

3:30–
4:30 am
Pickup from accommodation
I pick you up directly from your hotel or ryokan in Kawaguchiko, Fuefuki, or the surrounding area. Exact time confirmed the evening before based on seasonal sunrise.
Drive
The road up to Shindo Pass
A winding mountain road in the dark — part of the experience. We talk, I explain what we're about to photograph, and the anticipation builds. On clear mornings, the stars above Fuefuki are extraordinary.
Arrival
First light on the decks
We arrive before dawn to find position. In the pre-sunrise quiet, the lakes below are completely still. Mt. Fuji is a silhouette against a darkening blue sky. This is already a photograph.
Sunrise
The golden window — 15 to 30 minutes
When the summit catches the first light and the rest of the world is still in shadow, there is nothing quite like it anywhere in Yamanashi. This is why we came. We move, we shoot, and we don't overthink it.
After
Hidden viewpoints in Fuefuki
After sunrise, we continue to lesser-known viewpoints within Fuefuki — orchards, ridgeline paths, and quiet corners of the valley. The morning light is still exceptional, and you now have the whole landscape to yourselves.
End
Drop-off & breakfast
You're back at your accommodation by early morning — in time for a ryokan breakfast, or to sleep for two hours with photographs worth keeping for the rest of your life.

Best Time to Visit

Twin Terrace in every season.

Spring · March – May
Peach Blossoms & Clear Skies
The most popular season. Peach orchards in full bloom in the valley below, snow-capped Mt. Fuji above. April is peak — book 6+ weeks ahead.
3–12°C at dawn
Summer · June – August
Clear Air & Late Sunrises
Later sunrises mean a less extreme departure time. Mt. Fuji is often snowless but clearly defined. Green vineyards stretch across the valley floor. Long days, flexible scheduling.
10–18°C at dawn
Autumn · September – November
First Snow & Autumn Colour
The first snowfall returns to Mt. Fuji's summit in October. The air is the clearest of the year. Harvest season in the valley below. The photographer's personal favourite season.
2–10°C at dawn
Winter · December – February
Dramatic & Uncrowded
Mt. Fuji at its most iconic — pure white, perfectly defined against a cold clear sky. Fewer visitors. Road access depends on snowfall; confirmed with you in advance.
−5–3°C at dawn

Questions

Things people ask before booking.

Departure is typically between 3:30 and 4:30am, depending on the season and sunrise time. I confirm the exact time the evening before your session.

We monitor the forecast together from 2 days before. If visibility is poor, I'll recommend postponing to another morning during your stay — at no extra charge. If your schedule doesn't allow a reschedule, we find the best alternative available on the day.

No — Shindo Pass is accessible by private car only. There is no public bus or taxi service to the viewpoint. Pickup from your accommodation is always included in the session price.

At 1,400m elevation, mornings are noticeably colder than at lake level — even in summer. After booking, I send a clothing guide tailored to your session month. In winter, temperatures at dawn can fall below −5°C.

Rain cancels the sunrise session. We reschedule to another morning at no charge, or — if your schedule doesn't allow it — we shift to a daytime Fuefuki session in whatever weather the day brings. Some of the most interesting photographs come from unexpected conditions.

Yes — if Twin Terrace timing doesn't work for your schedule, the Fuefuki Mt. Fuji Session (from $550) and the Kawaguchiko Session (from $700) are available as daytime or golden-hour alternatives. See all sessions on the sessions page.
